Connor Storrs--Smarty Pants!
Our little Connor is a reader! He started his reading program a few weeks ago & has already passed off 4 books! The kids have a reading day each week where they can pass off the book they have been reading for the previous week & get a new book for the week ahead. Well, Connor's teacher sent a note home to me a few days ago saying that she would try let Connor pass off books twice a week since he's doing so well! Wow...go kid! I was a proud mama!
I have to admit though, that I was a little surprised. When Connor first started bringing home books, they were pretty easy (one or two words a page). Connor figured out that it was easier to memorize the words, rather than learning the concept of reading. He would get so frustrated when I would make him sound out the words. Why read when you can memorize? But, once he started into the "full sentence" books, he realized he wasn't going to be able to memorize every word anymore & he started really trying to sound out the words & learn the concepts. It has been so awesome to see the smile on his face when he works on a word over & over and then gets it on his own! He's just so proud of himself...and I'm so proud of him too! Now, instead of me reading him bedtime stories, he reads to me! He's growing up so fast! Before I know it, he'll be reading anatomy & physics books in college & he won't need me anymore! Connor reminds me of his mom who learned to read when she was four from Miss Rachel, but then pretended not to read when she was in the 1st grade. It was so frustrating to tell the teacher that she could read and the teacher tell me that she didn't believe me. (We finally got little Lindsay to give a demonstration and the rest is history!) Connor is a smarty pants because he has to make up for your lack of smarty pants-ness. Or maybe it is the fact that you never drank Diet Dr. Pepper's when you were pregnant with him, and listened to classical music. However, Aiden, with the Diet Dr. Pepper's and Fergie, might turn out a little differently... :) jk! (we shall find out!!)
WTG Connor for Reading!!! Now just wait until he is in 2nd grade and tells his teacher that he wants to read 6th grade level books. It is awesome when they can read to you and to see the smile on their face when they know the words that they are reading. Now he will read everything, things at the store, the billboards, whatever has words, and you can;t hide anything! Garrett, Parker and Madi say that it is COOL! and AWESOME! (they told me to put the exclamation marks after those words) that he is reading!!!!
